Microbes in Human Welfare
11 lessons 85 min 2 simulations
This chapter turns from the microbes that make us ill to the ones that work for us. It follows them from the kitchen (curd, dough, cheese) into industry (beverages, antibiotics, acids, enzymes and drugs), through sewage treatment and biogas plants, and out into the field as biocontrol agents and biofertilisers.
What the exam asks
NEET asks organism-product matches (Propionibacterium sharmanii and Swiss cheese, Aspergillus niger and citric acid, Trichoderma polysporum and cyclosporin A, Monascus purpureus and statins), which drinks are distilled, the steps of primary and secondary sewage treatment with the meaning of BOD, methanogens and the biogas plant, Bt and baculoviruses in biocontrol, and the nitrogen fixers and mycorrhiza among biofertilisers. Marks are lost by swapping the acid producers, by calling beer a distilled drink, and by thinking a high BOD means clean water.
