NEET 2026 Physics, question 23

Question 23 of the NEET 2026 paper (re-exam) is a Physics question from System of Particles and Rotational Motion. Its idea, Motion of Center of Mass, was asked only this once in NEET 2017–2026. The NTA final answer key gives option 3.

Q23 · Physics

A frictionless circular wire of unit radius is fixed on the horizontal plane. Two point particles of unit mass start moving simultaneously from point A(θ=π2)A\left(\theta=\frac{\pi}{2}\right) with identical uniform angular speeds in opposite directions, and meet again at point B(θ=−π2)B\left(\theta=-\frac{\pi}{2}\right). During this time, which of the following figures schematically represent the magnitude of the total linear momentum P of the system, as a function of θ\theta ?

The figure, described in words

Circle with A at top (theta = pi/2) and B at bottom (theta = -pi/2); options are graphs of P vs theta from pi/2 to -pi/2.

  1. 1[graph: P constant (horizontal line) from pi/2 to -pi/2]
  2. 2[graph: P decreases from a maximum at pi/2 to zero at the middle (theta = 0) then rises again, two arcs]
  3. 3[graph: P rises from zero at pi/2 to a maximum and falls to zero at -pi/2 (semicircle-like arc)]Official answer
  4. 4[graph: P decreases linearly from a maximum at pi/2 to zero at -pi/2]
