JEE Main 4 April 2025, Shift 2, Chemistry Q56
Question 56 of 75 in this shift, Chemistry question 6 of 25, Section A.
Given below are two statements :
Statement (I) : For (with lone pairs on Cl), all three possible structures may be drawn as follows.
[figure: three trigonal-bipyramidal structures I, II, III of ClF3 with Cl at centre, three F atoms and two lone pairs drawn as orbitals]
Statement (II) : Structure III is most stable, as the orbitals having the lone pairs are axial, where the lp - bp repulsion is minimum.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
The figure, in words
Three drawings (I, II, III) of ClF3 as trigonal bipyramids with Cl at centre, three F atoms and two lone-pair orbitals: in I both lone pairs are equatorial (F above and below, one F to the right); in II one lone pair is axial and one equatorial; in III both lone pairs are axial.- (1)Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
- (2)Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
- (3)Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrectOfficial answer
