Biology · Class 11 · Chapter 1
The Living World
8 lessons 64 min 2 simulations
This chapter asks how biologists keep track of the enormous variety of living things. It sets out why organisms need one agreed scientific name, how binomial names are written, what classification, taxonomy and systematics mean, and how organisms are placed in a ladder of taxonomic categories from species up to kingdom. It is the vocabulary for the rest of the Diversity unit.
What the exam asks
NEET asks the rules of writing a scientific name, the correct order of taxonomic categories, which character grows or shrinks as you move up the hierarchy, and the family, order, class and phylum of the organisms in the NCERT table (man, housefly, mango, wheat). Marks are lost on small details: Primata not Primates, Polymoniales for Solanaceae, and the division of mango and wheat being Angiospermae.
