Human Health and Disease
13 lessons 98 min 2 simulations
This chapter asks what keeps a body healthy and what makes it sick. It surveys the common infectious diseases and the pathogens behind them, then builds the immune system from its innate barriers to antibodies, memory, vaccines, allergy and the lymphoid organs, and closes with AIDS, cancer, and the abuse of drugs, tobacco and alcohol.
What the exam asks
NEET asks pathogen-disease-symptom matches (Salmonella typhi and the Widal test, Plasmodium and haemozoin, Wuchereria and elephantiasis, the three ringworm fungi), the four innate barriers, H2L2 and the antibody classes, active versus passive examples, primary and secondary lymphoid organs, the HIV sequence through macrophages and helper T cells, and the source plant and action of each abused drug. Marks are lost by calling colostrum active immunity, by listing the thymus as secondary, by giving the lungs to the common cold, and by mixing up which drug comes from which plant.
