Free vs paid NEET preparation apps: what you get for the money
The syllabus, the textbooks and official mock tests are free. What you pay for is teaching, structure and support.
The short answer
Free resources cover more than many students expect: the NCERT textbooks the NMC syllabus is based on, NTA's own National Test Abhyas mocks, free spaced-repetition tools and free tiers of AI assistants. Paid apps and courses add live teaching, a structured timetable, test series, printed material, mentors and human doubt support, at prices that range from monthly subscriptions to over a lakh of rupees for a two-year course. Pay when you need teaching or structure you cannot supply yourself; if you have been taught and need practice and revision, free resources can carry much of the load.
Free apps and resources and Paid apps and courses, side by side
Every row comes from public material, numbered against the source list below and checked on 2 Oct 2026. Where something is not published, we say so rather than guess. Features change; check the source before you decide.
| Feature | Free apps and resources | Paid apps and courses |
|---|---|---|
| Examples (as described by the providers)[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] | NCERT textbooks; NTA's National Test Abhyas; desktop Anki; free tiers of ChatGPT and Gemini; free live classes and mocks on Unacademy | Live NEET courses from Vedantu, Infinity Learn and Aakash; subscriptions to Unacademy and to AI assistants |
| Textbooks[2][8][9] | NCERT Class 11 and 12 textbooks are free to download | Courses add their own books, such as Vedantu's TATVA NEET books and Infinity Learn's NEET books |
| Mock tests[1][6][8][9] | Free computer-based mocks from NTA's National Test Abhyas; Unacademy lists free mock tests | Course test series, such as Vedantu's All India test series and Infinity Learn's NEET test series |
| Teaching[6][7][8][9] | Free lectures exist (Unacademy lists free live classes; Aakash's website advertises free concept videos), but not a full structured course | Full live or recorded courses with a timetable |
| Doubt support[4][5][8][9] | Free tiers of AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini | Human doubt solving and mentors: Vedantu's NEET batch lists 24/7 one-on-one doubt solving and a personal mentor; Infinity Learn lists one-on-one mentorship |
| Revision scheduling[3][8][9] | Desktop Anki is free and supports FSRS | Not stated publicly on the course pages we checked |
| Cost[5][8][9] | Free | From monthly subscriptions (Google AI Plus ₹399/month) to two-year live courses (Vedantu ₹1,14,999; Infinity Learn ₹1,64,420) |
Does paying get better results?
We could not find any NTA or NMC data that compares NEET results by how much a candidate spent on preparation, so we make no claim either way. Selection counts and testimonials in advertising cannot be checked against a common baseline.
What the evidence does support is about method. A 2013 review of learning techniques by Dunlosky and colleagues rated practice testing and spaced practice as high utility. Both are available free: NTA's mocks for testing, and free spaced-repetition tools for revision.
Where free resources are the better choice
- You have been taught the syllabus and your gap is practice, testing and revision.
- You can keep your own timetable and review your own mistakes.
- Course fees are not practical for your family.
- You want to try a way of studying before committing money to it.
Where paid apps and courses are the better choice
- You still need large parts of the Class 11 and 12 syllabus taught to you.
- You need a timetable set by someone else to keep going.
- You want doubts answered by a person, and a mentor who follows your progress.
- You want printed material and a regular test series in one place.

Frequently asked questions
Can I prepare for NEET with only free resources?
Many of the core materials are free: NCERT textbooks, NTA's National Test Abhyas mocks and desktop Anki for spaced repetition. What free resources do not give you is a structured course, a timetable set for you or reliable human doubt support, so they suit students who have been taught the syllabus and can organise themselves.
Are paid NEET courses worth it?
They are worth it when you need what they add: live teaching, a timetable, printed material, a test series and human doubt support. We could not find official data comparing results by spending, so judge a course by whether it supplies something you cannot get free.
How much do online NEET courses cost?
On 2 Oct 2026, Vedantu's course page listed a two-year NEET batch at ₹1,14,999 and Infinity Learn listed a two-year live course at ₹1,64,420. Prices change and vary by batch, so check the provider's own page.
What should I watch for in a free offer?
Check whether it is free or a trial. Google's student offer for Gemini, for example, asks for a payment method and charges ₹399/month after the free year unless cancelled.
What does Lumi offer free?
On lumineet.com: chapter-wise NCERT notes, chapter-wise NEET questions with step-by-step solutions, and interactive lessons with simulations. The app's current plans are shown in the app.
