NEET ChemistryClass 11Hybridisation and molecular shapeMediumAssertion–Reason

The Assertion (A) and Reason (R) below concern the shape of a xenon fluoride. Read them and choose the option that correctly describes their relationship.

  • Assertion (A): Xenon tetrafluoride (XeF₄) has a square planar molecular shape.
  • Reason (R): The Xe atom in XeF₄ is sp³d² hybridised, and its two lone pairs occupy the axial positions of the octahedral electron-pair geometry, leaving the four F atoms and Xe in one plane.
