Carboxylic acids with α-hydrogens can be halogenated using red phosphorus. Judge the Assertion (A) and the Reason (R) below.
- Assertion (A): Ethanoic acid treated with Cl₂ and red phosphorus gives chloroethanoic acid.
- Reason (R): Carboxylic acids have no α-hydrogens, so halogen must replace the hydrogen of the –COOH group.
